Kathy Steele, of Markleysburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, April 19, 2012. She was surrounded by her loving family. The passing ended a brave, nine-year fight against ovarian cancer. The courage with which she fought this disease was an inspiration to all who knew her. However, her life was not defined by her sickness, but by her steadfast determination to serve God with her time, talent and treasure.
Kathy was born July 8, 1957 in Kingwood, W.Va., daughter of James L. and Rosalie (Dennis) Christman of Markleysburg.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband the Rev. Jerry Steele; two children, Christopher Steele, at home and Kenneth Steele and wife Heather of Markleysburg; one sister, Nancy Glass and husband Guy of Tampa, Fla. and a brother, Dennis Christman and wife Teresa of Ohiopyle and her step-grandmother, Ruth Dennis of Hopwood.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Clarence and Catherine Dennis.
In the business world, Kathy enjoyed a successful career as an accountant. She received her BA in Accounting from Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. She went on to earn an MBA at Averett College in Danville, Va. Kathy was a financial analyst in the President’s Office at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. After moving to Pennsylvania with her husband Jerry, she became the accountant for Fairchance Construction. In addition to her contributions to the corporate world, Kathy served as treasurer on the National Pike Water Authority.
For over thirty years, Kathy labored faithfully as a dedicated pastor’s wife. She served churches in Nashville, Tenn., and in Hopewell, Richmond and Charlottesville, Va. Finally, she served at New Life Covenant Church in Markleysburg, Pa. for the past eighteen years. She was a talented musician and singer who touched people’s lives with her gifts.
Although her time on earth was short by today’s standards, Kathy lived a full life and completed her God-given assignment. While others chose to measure success by the length of their lives, Kathy chose to measure her success by her contributions. While her headstone will mark the dates of her birth and death, it will be the time indicated by the dash between the dates that we will remember. She was truly a remarkable woman who profoundly impacted every person she met.
Visitation times for Kathy will be in NEW LIFE COVENANT CHURCH on Rt. 40 in Markleysburg on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m, on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m, the hour of service with the Rev. Dr. Harold Bare, Pastor of Covenant Church in Charlottesville, Va. officiating. Assisting Dr. Bare will be the Rev. Victor Morris. Interment will follow in Thomas Cemetery, Markleysburg.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Building Fund at the New Life Covenant Church, 4809 National Pike, Markleysburg, Pa. 15459.
Kathy’s family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at Fayette Home Care for the wonderful care they gave her, especially during her time on hospice.
